SPENGA CREW Spotlight: Amy Harris
If you’ve ever taken a session with Amy then you know at least three things about her already:
- You can’t help but sing, dance, and fist pump to her playlists (where does she find all that music?!)
- Her voice is so incredible on the mic, you’ll wonder why she isn’t in radio or working as a voice over artist (it’s THAT good!)
- She makes you WERK but, you never EVER regret it!
RIGHT?!

How did you get into fitness?
I started taking dance classes when I was 3 years old and it became my WORLD from then on, to be a performer and teacher. I ventured into teaching group exercise classes about 10 years ago as a barre fitness instructor and have expanded to other styles throughout my fitness career.
How do you motivate yourself?
I make my personal workouts as fun as possible and vary the types of workouts I do. I LOVE variety and trying new things. I want to be as fit as possible for as long as possible - that's my main motivation.
How do you motivate others?
With killer playlists! It's all about the music and encouraging others to do THEIR personal best and enjoy being active.
In your sessions, how do you accommodate different skill and fitness levels?
I always give options and modifications to make exercises easier or harder. I encourage my clients to work at their personal fitness level and not worry about what anyone else is doing. Super important!
What are the top 3 exercises you recommend for every client?
If there are no physical limitations, I think the 3 most bang-for-your-buck exercises are PLANKS, BURPEES, and SQUATS....and I would add in pushup variations with the planks or burpees to hit the arms ????
How can people best prepare for your sessions?
Come fully rested, light snack/meal, start hydrating before class (water is so important and it should already be in your system BEFORE you start working out), and be ready to jam out to some fun tunes!
Who are your heroes and role models?
My daughter is my hero because I wouldn't be who I am without her ❤️ #truth. When it comes to role models, I can only HOPE to be half the mom my mom is!! #moretruth But also my dance teacher/friend "Big Amy" was always someone I looked up to, for many reasons. She was my hero in certain ways too and shaped my love for dance and fitness. When it comes to celebrity role models, I love Misty Copeland for her resilience, determination, and talent - she's amazing!
If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Right now, in the COVID world, I just wish I could go home to Michigan to visit my family! ???? Pre-COVID, my answer would've been Rome, Italy to see The Colosseum, and anywhere with amazing waterfalls. I ❤️ waterfalls!
